Japan agrees to help Vietnam develop nuclear power plants

Japan, the world’s third-biggest nuclear generator, signed an agreement with Vietnam to help the Southeast Asian country build nuclear plants to ease a power shortage.

Japan’s trade ministry will help Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade through March 2010 to develop and promote its nuclear project and train workers to operate the plant, according to a statement from the Japanese side released in Tokyo Thursday.

Vietnam plans to build two nuclear power plants, with commercial operation slated by 2020, in a bid to provide enough electricity for its economy that grew 8.5 percent last year.

In 2007, the US, the world’s biggest nuclear power generator, said it would assist Vietnam in developing civilian nuclear power “safely and securely.”

“The agreement will allow Japan to share its experience in operating nuclear reactors for about five decades with Vietnam,” the statement said.

Japan’s government as well as companies will cooperate in helping Vietnam.

Vietnam aims to start building the atomic plant by 2015, the statement said.

The first reactor will have a capacity to generate 2,000 megawatts of electricity, a Vietnam government official said last year.
